Children who suffer from encopresis often feel defined by their problem. However, in "Poo Goes Home to Pooland," the problem is externalized as a troublesome character, creating distance between the child and feelings of shame. This approach not only helps alleviate fears but also empowers the child and their family to overcome the challenges associated with encopresis.
'Externalizing' stories like this have proven to be effective in engaging children in behavioral treatment programs, particularly within a family therapy context. Even if you have a different therapeutic style, you may still find these stories useful in your practice.
"Poo Goes Home to Pooland" was specifically designed to resonate with children up to around seven years of age, both in terms of style and content. The illustrations and accompanying text are carefully crafted to promote understanding of toileting matters and alleviate anxiety. Topics covered include expressing unhappy feelings and organizing oneself when needing to use the bathroom.
Referencing "Pooland" when discussing the issue may help children gain control over their bowel movements.
This book was written and illustrated by Dr. Tamsin Black during her final year of Doctoral Training in Clinical Psychology at the University of Newcastle. She is currently working as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist in East London.
